The Secretariat of Welfare and Social Equality (SEBIEN) of Mexico City announced the implementation of the Universal Citizen Income program, aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals between the ages of 57 and 59. The main purpose of this initiative is to ensure a mechanism for social protection and guarantee a minimum income for families in the face of labor instability, as well as contribute to reducing the income gap between men and women in this age range.
In the fiscal year 2024, the program is expected to provide financial support through cash transfers from November to December, totaling $2,000 pesos per eligible adult. In its first year of operation, the inclusion of 20,000 people is anticipated, representing 12.1% of the target population. For the following year, 2025, there are plans to increase coverage by incorporating 25,000 new individuals, thus reaching an additional 7.5% and a total of 13.5% of the target population.
For the year 2026, the inclusion of 40,000 more people is projected, adding up to a total of 85,000 beneficiaries, equivalent to 25.2% of the target population for that year. The requirements to enter the program include being between 57 years and 59 years 11 months, residing permanently in Mexico City, not receiving other government economic assistance of the same kind, and presenting the required documentation at the time of registration, such as valid official identification, birth certificate, CURP, and proof of address not older than three months.
Although the official call to apply for this support has not yet been announced, authorities indicated that it is expected to be published during the course of this year.
